MARCH 2013 MEETING NOTES

April 12, 2013

WOOLY WONDERS
Notes of meeting of March 23, 2013

The meeting was held at the Pink Champagne Cupcakerie in Franklin.

Kathi presented the Treasurer’s report. Annual dues remain at $20.

Members reaffirmed support of the Crawford County Fair and the Venango 4-H Fair in the form of prizes for hand knit/crocheted items.

Plans for attendance at Knitter’s Fantasy (April 6) were discussed. The members who attended Pgh Knit and Crochet Festival commented on their experience. The 2014 Festival will be held on March 15 & 16. Julie mentioned that the yarn skein winding to support Hog Heaven would be provided on Friday in addition to Saturday and Sunday and more volunteer “winders” are appreciated.

Our Show and Tell session included a variety of items including knitted toys, catnip mice from practice sock toes, hats, Locker hooking knitting, a Sashay ribbon yarn scarf, and another type of beaded jewelry-a crocheted necklace made by Debi’s daughter.   It can be seem on Ravelry— “Infamous Beaded Necklace” by Devon Clement. This necklace uses a “New Metallics” thread by “On the Surface”.   This fiber is available in several metallic colors and interested members may wish to combine on-line orders. Julie brought a soon to be released book of nature themed knits- “Botanical Knits” by Alana Dakos.

Our project was led by Debi and focused on “Judy’s Magic Cast- on” for toe up socks. Debi and Bridgett created handouts of helpful tips for this cast on method and everyone practiced the method. The next meeting (April 27) will include a continuation of the toe up sock construction using “Gusset Heel Basic Sock” pattern by Wendy Johnson.

Suzanne brought Series 1 through 6 of the Knitting Daily DVD series. Series 7 and 8 have been released and may be added to our library. Catherine has borrowed Series 3 and 4.

MARCH PROJECT DETAILS

March 10, 2013

Here is the pattern that we will be using for the toe-up sock class on March 23rd.

FINGERING WEIGHT WITH GUSSET HEEL SOCKS
Everyone should bring sock/fingering wt yarn and 2 circular needles in the size that they like to use for socks.   This will probably be size 1-3, depending on the specific yarn and how tight they knit.   You can either bring scraps if they just want to try the “Judy’s Magic Cast-on” or 100gr of yarn—enough for a pair of socks.

The pattern is available for free on Wendy Johnson’s web site. You can see some of her other free patterns by following the link below. She is a toe up sock guru and also has some nice lace shawl/shawlette patterns.

FEBRUARY 2013 MEETING NOTES

March 4, 2013

WOOLY WONDERS
Notes of meeting of February 23, 2013

The meeting was held at the Pink Champagne Cupcakery in Franklin.

Kathi presented the Treasurer’s report. Annual dues remain at $20.

We discussed the knitting that we are doing for the women’s shelter and domestic violence awareness. Kathi brought a sample of a beaded “Coping Angel” and a verse of support. She offered to make some of the angels to include with the knit items with the support sentiments coming from “Wooly Wonders”. Catherine provided contact information for the organizers of the Domestic Violence walk in October.
Members were reminded of the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival in March and Knitter’s Fantasy in April.

Our class project was “An Introduction to Knitting with Beads and Wire”. Catherine and Nikki had prepared kits with all of the necessary items. Catherine showed samples of bracelets and necklaces. Knitting with wire was new for most of us, but with Catherine’s direction, we strung our beads and cast on. As we worked on the project, the versatility and potential became very clear and we discussed what else we could do with beads and wire. Everyone was successful in creating beaded wire knitting. Thank you Catherine and Nikki!

Our project for March and April will be led by Debi W. She will teach us sock knitting from the toe up. We will need 2 circular needles and yarn (fingering/sock weight yarn with size 2 needles or DK weight yarn and size 4 needles). Debi recommended that we practice “Judy’s Magic Cast-on”. Instructions for this cast-on can be found in many knitting books and on-line. If desired, we can first practice this method and make a small sachet for lavender or other fragrant material. Debi also recommended “Socks From the Toe Up” by Wendy Johnson as an excellent resource. Our project will be following the pattern for the “gusset heel basic sock”. After the toe-up sock classes, we will move on to ” Socks From the Top Down” in May and June, led by Bridgett.

Show and Tell followed the class. We shared many beautiful baby blankets, scarves, hats, cowls, miniature socks, mittens and hats, and skeins of lovely soft yarn.

Julie distributed Wooly Wonders membership cards for 2013.

NOTE:  Since our usual meeting date (the last Saturday) in March falls on Easter Saturday we will meet one week earlier—March 23 at 10:00 at the Pink Champagne Cupcakery.

JANUARY 2013 MEETING NOTES

February 9, 2013

WOOLY WONDERS FIBER GUILD
Notes of meeting of 1/26/13

The meeting was held at the Pink Champagne Cupcakery in Franklin. Everyone liked the convenience (and the coffee and cupcakes!) at this meeting location and decided to use it for future meetings.

We began with Show and Tell and members shared many completed helix scarves, hats, sweaters, wash cloths, socks and felted items.

Kathy gave the Treasurer’s report. Annual dues will continue to be $20 for 2013. Members agreed to contribute $10 per meeting from the treasury to the tip jar at the Cupcakery.

Officers for 2013 are as follows:
President — Nikki P.
Treasurer — Kathy Z.
Secretary — Bridgett D.
Program Coordinator — Catherine E.

Catherine discussed our annual knitting project for Family Services and Children’s Aid. The women’s shelter has requested the following items: baby blankets, baby booties, scarves, hats and mittens for all ages, and wash clothes. We plan to collect all items in time for the October Domestic Violence Awareness walk. We have also been invited to tour the shelter if desired.

Members were reminded of the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival that will be held in Mars on March 15 – 17.

We will continue to meet on the last Saturday of the month. Our class for the February 23 meeting will be “Knitting with Beads and Wire” presented by Catherine. She recommended non- metallic needles and will prepare kits with the necessary beads and wire. Additional information will be available prior to the meeting.
.
Ideas for future classes included a series of sock related topics, both “toe-up” and “top down” (we acknowledged that these would require some homework). Debi recommended that we practice the “Judy’s Magic Cast-on” in preparation for the toe up sock class.

Other possible class topics included knitting with ribbon -type yarns, knitting dish towel toppers. Additional thoughts for classes can be communicated to Catherine or brought to our next meeting.
